Short communication: New records of sperm whale social units in the Pelagos Sanctuary, Mediterranean Sea

نویسندگان

چکیده

In the Ligurian Sea, northern part of Western Mediterranean sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus Linnaeus, 1758) are historically sighted as solitary individuals or loose aggregations males, while social units extremely occasional. On 21 August 2020, two different were recorded in this area with an estimate total (12 first and nine second). The whale subpopulation is considered Endangered under IUCN Red List understanding its movements structure lacking. These observations increase our knowledge on conservation biology possible threats.

A spatially explicit risk assessment approach: Cetaceans and marine traffic in the Pelagos Sanctuary (Mediterranean Sea)

Spatially explicit risk assessment is an essential component of Marine Spatial Planning (MSP), which provides a comprehensive framework for managing multiple uses of the marine environment, minimizing environmental impacts and conflicts among users. In this study, we assessed the risk of the exposure to high intensity vessel traffic areas for the three most abundant cetacean species (Stenella c...

Aerial survey abundance estimates of the loggerhead sea turtle Caretta caretta in the Pelagos Sanctuary, northwestern Mediterranean Sea

Aerial line transect surveys, totalling 16 590 km, were performed in winter and summer 2009 in the Pelagos Sanctuary, NW Mediterranean. A total of 207 loggerhead sea turtles were sighted, with only 9 sightings during the winter. In this season average raw ‘surface’ density (i.e. animals at or near the surface) was 0.002 turtles km–2, and on the basis of line-transect analysis, we estimated 237 ...

Monitoring Winter and Summer Abundance of Cetaceans in the Pelagos Sanctuary (Northwestern Mediterranean Sea) Through Aerial Surveys

Systematic long-term monitoring of abundance is essential to inform conservation measures and evaluate their effectiveness. To instigate such work in the Pelagos Sanctuary in the Mediterranean, two aerial surveys were conducted in winter and summer 2009. A total of 467 (131 in winter, 336 in summer) sightings of 7 species was made. Sample sizes were sufficient to estimate abundance of fin whale...

Time patterns of sperm whale codas recorded in the Mediterranean Sea 1985-1996.

A distinctive vocalization of the sperm whale, Physeter macrocephalus (=P. catodon), is the coda: a short click sequence with a distinctive stereotyped time pattern [Watkins and Schevill, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 62, 1485-1490 (1977)]. Coda repertoires have been found to vary both geographically and with group affiliation [Weilgart and Whitehead, Behav. Ecol. Sociobiol. 40, 277-285 (1997)]. In this ...
